ROOM

With Jacob Tremblay, Brie Larson, Joan Allen, William H. Macy, Sean Bridgers

Written by Emma Donoghue
Directed by Lenny Abrahamson

This dark film has a pin prick of light at its centre that illuminates, expanding from despair to hope.

A woman has been held hostage in a single, soundproofed room for years. Impregnated by her captor, the child she bore as a result has become her only sanity. But within this confinement, with such little stimuli, she has to create an entire new world for him within this space, using her imagination to make every day an adventure, the simplest of things a wonder. With fear enforcing her obedience, after 5 years she takes a stand, knowing this already dire situation won't end pretty, decides to at least make an attempt to get her son out of there.

Room is an amazing study of mother-child bonding and overcoming the greatest of odds.
Very much a movie of two halves, the second looks at the aftermath of the ordeal for both victims in a very sensitive and real way.

Brie Larson won an Oscar for her role, but Jacob Tremblay was absolutely fantastic as the boy at the centre of the story, and in many ways eclipsed her.
